• Our plug-in fixture option includes 15 feet (hanging lamps) or 10 feet (wall sconces) of cord and plugs into a standard wall outlet. We provide extra cord length so that you can drop the pendant down from the ceiling and swag the cord to the nearest wall where the cord can run down the wall and to an outlet.

• Our hardwired fixture option includes 6 feet of cord and will be directly wired to the wall or ceiling electrical box by a certified electrician. The cord is cuttable to the desired length. Please note for any dropdown lengths that are less than 7 inches, please email to request a low profile fitting or a flush mount fixture.

Our plug-in fixture option is a great choice for anyone who does not have an electrical box in the place where the desired light fixture would hang or for those who cannot change out the existing light fixtures in your space; i.e. anyone renting a home or apartment.

The benefits are the same for each fixture type. The fixture type selection is based on what options you have available to power your lamp (electrical box in the wall or ceiling or wall outlet).

All our light fixtures can come in a plug-in option (for chandeliers, please email us for this customization). Our plug-in options only require an accessible wall outlet and do not need to be hardwired to an electrical box. Both our sconces and pendants are easy to secure to a wall or ceiling using 1-2 screws. These are minimally invasive and can be patched upon moving out. 

The color of the mycelium skin is naturally white. Over time the skin will age and take on a slightly more golden hue. If you wish to maintain a bright white exterior, select our white milk paint option or explore the other color options we have available in limewash paint.

The mycelium skin is naturally white and can be grown in a thick layer to feel soft and fuzzy like a lamb’s ear or similar to the feel of a rind of brie cheese. The interior of our Hemi lampshades will have a different look and feel than the exterior and no two lampshades are exactly alike. Some may have a thicker mycelium skin with a softer texture to touch, while others may have a thinner mycelium skin and you may see more of the hemp substrate structure. If you have a particular preference, please email us with your order number to request a desired aesthetic and texture.

Our oldest lampshades are 10+ years old and are still looking beautiful! Even though the material is biodegradable, as an indoor lighting application the material is stable and inert and will bring you many years of design satisfaction.

To clean the shade of dust, please use a duster and gently brush the exterior shade. Do not use any liquids or cleaners.

The lighting is rated for indoor use only. Dry, climate-controlled environments are best. If using for a bathroom or kitchen application, please consider our painted options to best preserve the material from moisture and airborne grease.

Mycelium is naturally hydrophobic but our hemp substrate is not, which is why our lighting is UL listed for indoor use only. Please note the light fixtures are not damp rated.  We do not recommend using our lighting in small bathrooms with a shower or tub that would frequently be used and where a fair amount of moisture is present on a recurring basis. 

If installing in a kitchen or bathroom we suggest purchasing the white milk paint option or one of our mineral paints which seals the exterior of the lampshade and protects from airborne grease & moisture.

Unless one of our non-toxic color pigments is selected for your order, we do not add any coating to the lampshades. The natural mycelium skin protects the structure of the lampshade while also allowing it to be soft to the touch.

Our lampshades are grown from living mycelium and hemp stalks. These all-natural materials can produce a faint earthy odor upon unboxing; however, it is subtle smell within spaces and soon becomes non-detectable after installing.

Grown to last, our lampshades are durable, can absorb impact and have been tested to hold up to 130 lbs (depending on lampshade type). We know this because we’ve stood on top of a Hemi Medium lampshade and jumped, without even a crack or dent! 

During installation, please be mindful of the rim of the lampshades. Often the rim can hit against another object such as a ladder and create a small divot or cause a piece of hemp to chip out. Always wear the gloves provided when installing your light fixture to limit any grease or dirt from your hands touching the lampshade.

The lampshade is grown using mushroom mycelium, but will definitely not taste like a mushroom. And we do not recommend ingesting your lampshade. However, your lampshade is made from only natural materials that are safe and healthy for both people and the planet.
