The result is a luminaire unlike anything manufactured — organic in texture, warm in light, and made from natural materials that give back to the earth when their work is done.

What Makes MushLume Different
This is where the story diverges from every other lighting brand. MushLume shades are not cast, injected, blown, or stamped. They are grown — using the root structure of fungi, called mycelium, bound to an agricultural hemp substrate. The process takes days. Each shade emerges slightly different from the last, carrying the natural variation of a living material.
The result is a fixture that is fully biodegradable, home-compostable, free of plastics, resins, and synthetic binders — and genuinely beautiful in a way that manufactured objects rarely are.

Mycelium lighting uses the root structure of fungi as the shade material. MushLume shades are grown — not manufactured — from mycelium bound to hemp substrate, producing a fully bio-based, biodegradable luminaire with a unique organic texture.

Yes. All MushLume fixtures are UL Listed for indoor use and tested to ASTM E84 Class A surface burning characteristics. The shades contain no VOCs, no formaldehyde, no synthetic resins, and no chemical flame retardants.

Any E26 medium-base LED, 60W equivalent. We recommend Tala LED for optimal color rendering and dim-to-warm performance. LED only — incandescent and halogen are not recommended. More about Tala bulbs

No — and that's intentional. Because each shade is grown rather than manufactured, every handmade piece carries natural variation in texture, surface detail, and organic character. No two are identical.

They go back to the Earth. Our mycelium biomaterial is home-compostable and will safely biodegrade without releasing toxins or pollutants into the environment.
