Light, Grown from Nature.

Handcrafted pendant lights, wall sconces, and table lamps — biofabricated from mushroom mycelium and carbon-sequestering hemp.

Handcrafted Mycelium Lighting

Every MushLume fixture begins not on a factory floor, but in our studio in Brooklyn, where living mycelium is grown into form over days. The result is a luminaire unlike anything manufactured — organic in texture, warm in light, and made from natural materials that give back to the earth when their work is done.

Grown, Not Manufactured

What Makes MushLume Different

This is where the story diverges from every other lighting brand. MushLume shades are not cast, injected, blown, or stamped. They are grown — using the root structure of fungi, called mycelium, bound to an agricultural hemp substrate. The process takes days. Each shade emerges slightly different from the last, carrying the natural variation of a living material.

The result is a fixture that is fully biodegradable, home-compostable, free of plastics, resins, and synthetic binders — and genuinely beautiful in a way that manufactured objects rarely are.

Regenerative by Design

Most lighting is made from materials the planet can't absorb — plastics, resins, composites that outlast the spaces they were meant to illuminate. We took the opposite path. Every MushLume shade is grown from mycelium and hemp, fire rated without chemical treatment, and home compostable at end of its life. Not a greener version of the same thing. Something genuinely different.

  • 100% bio-based — mycelium and hemp, nothing else

  • Home compostable — no special disposal, no toxic residue

  • ASTM E84 Class A — fire rated for commercial interior use without chemical flame retardants

  • UL Listed — electrical safety certified

  • Zero VOCs — no off-gassing into your indoor environment

  • Carbon-sequestering substrate — hemp pulls carbon from the atmosphere and stores it before becoming your lamp

  • Plastic-free packaging — recycled paper wadding, recyclable cardboard

MushLume Acoustic FAQ

  • Mycelium is made up of billions of microscopic filaments called hyphae. Packed densely together — over eight miles of them per cubic inch — this network acts as a natural sound trap, intercepting and dissipating acoustic energy rather than reflecting it back into the room.

  • Our mycelium biomaterial achieves an NRC of 0.6. NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) measures a material's ability to absorb sound on a scale of 0 (total reflection) to 1 (total absorption).

  • Acoustic lighting integrates illumination and sound absorption into a single fixture — so the object does double duty in your space. Standalone acoustic panels are purely functional, specified for maximum acoustic coverage in spaces that don't need additional light sources, or where the acoustic demand calls for dedicated treatment.

  • Yes. Custom dimensions, shapes, mounting configurations, and finishes are all available. We frequently work with project teams on bespoke installations. Reach out to start the conversation.

  • Yes. Our systems are used in hospitality, workplace, wellness, and institutional environments. For high-demand commercial applications, we recommend a project consultation to discuss performance targets, installation requirements, and lead times.

  • They go back to the Earth. Our mycelium biomaterial is home-compostable and will safely biodegrade without releasing toxins or pollutants into the environment.
