Will the natural mycelium shade change color over time?

The color of the mycelium skin is naturally white. Over time it will age and take on a slightly more golden hue. To maintain a bright white exterior, select the white milk paint option or explore available limewash colors.

How long will a mycelium lampshade last?

MushLume's oldest lampshades are 10+ years old and still beautiful. Even though the material is biodegradable, as an indoor lighting application it is stable and inert and will bring many years of use.

How do I clean a mycelium lampshade?

Use a duster and gently brush the exterior shade. Do not use any liquids or cleaners.

What spaces are best for mycelium lighting?

MushLume lighting is rated for indoor use only. Dry, climate-controlled environments are best. For bathroom or kitchen applications, painted options are recommended to preserve the material from moisture and airborne grease.

Can MushLume lighting be customized?

Is the Disc Sconce safe for indoor use?

Yes. It is UL Listed and tested to ASTM E84 Class A fire performance, with no off-gassing or VOCs.

What bulb does the Disc Sconce use?

A Tala Oval LED bulb sized to fit the fixture is included. For replacements, any E26 medium-base LED, 60W equivalent.

Does the Disc Sconce really dampen sound?

Yes. The hemp and mycelium biocomposite shade provides passive sound dampening, and the Disc is available as part of MushLume acoustic art-installation systems for multi-fixture applications. Contact us for acoustic performance data.

Does the plug-in sconce require an electrician?

No. The plug-in version mounts to the wall with included anchors and plugs into a standard outlet with a 15-foot cord. The hardwired version installs to a standard wall junction box, and a licensed electrician is recommended.

Is the Disc Sconce dimmable?

Yes, when used with a dimmable LED bulb. A compatible dimmer is strongly recommended but not included.

Named for its shape, the MushLume Disc Sconce is a 23-inch flush-mounted wall fixture handcrafted from carbon-sequestering hemp and living mushroom mycelium — grown, not manufactured. Simple in silhouette, its softly textured surface casts a delicate play of light across the wall, and the biocomposite shade dampens sound naturally — making it as much an acoustic element as a light. Each shade is hand-formed in our Brooklyn studio, so no two are exactly alike. A Tala Oval LED bulb, sized to fit the fixture, is included, and the plug-in version mounts with included wall anchors — no electrician required. Beautiful solo, in pairs, or clustered as an acoustic art installation.
