Transforming 1Hotel Brooklyn Bridge into a Organic Oasis with our MushLume Hemi Pendants
In 2017, MushLume Lighting embarked on a transformative project with the renowned 1Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, a luxury lifestyle hotel nestled in DUMBO, Brooklyn, where the East River meets the iconic Brooklyn Bridge Park. This unique collaboration, featuring our custom lighting in both the Riverhouse Suite and the hotel lobby, captured the shared vision of two eco-conscious brands, both driven by a commitment to sustainability and innovative design.

At the time, Waad El Hadidy, then design director at SH Hotels and Resorts, spearheaded this project with a clear vision: to create a luxury space that felt deeply connected to nature, where each design element honored the organic world. As part of this vision, she sought a lighting solution that would not only provide illumination but also evoke a sense of nature, texture and curiosity—something organic and tactile that would seamlessly blend into the sustainable ethos of the 1Hotels brand. The result was a custom mycelium lampshade installation, grown from the roots of mushrooms, which now gracefully spans the ceiling of the Riverhouse Suite. Each lampshade varies in size and height, forming a dynamic, cloud-like structure that invites guests to experience both the visual beauty and the natural textures of the lighting. Elsewhere, in the lobby of the hotel, our MushLume Cup Light Table Lamp (see below) also graces the gathering tables, adding to the space’s natural ambiance.

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the process itself. In collaboration with 1Hotels, we created an interactive exhibit in Industry City, Brooklyn, where the public could witness the lampshades being molded and grown. Over the course of a month, visitors were invited to explore the biofabrication process up close, with free workshops on how to grow mycelium-based products.

This exhibition not only highlighted the innovative material science behind the lampshades but also engaged the local community and provided educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. It was an embodiment of our mission to inspire a deeper connection to nature while fostering awareness about sustainable design.

The custom installation for the 1Hotel Brooklyn Bridge marked our first major hospitality project and demonstrated how sustainability and design can coexist beautifully, with each element enhancing the other. Completed in 2017, this project became a cornerstone for MushLume Lighting, illustrating our commitment to creating elevated spaces that respect the natural world. Even today, this installation exemplifies how an eco-conscious materials, like mycelium, can bring both lasting beauty and purpose to high-end interiors—qualities our clients continue to seek for their own spaces.
