In the heart of Calgary’s vibrant downtown, The Westley Hotel stands as a beacon of sophisticated design with a nod to the city’s wild west roots. This boutique hotel, a part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, embodies Calgary’s dynamic personality—where urban modernity meets frontier spirit. As the first of its kind in Western Canada, The Westley Hotel showcases how thoughtful design can transform an architectural space into an experience. When approached by Frank Architecture & Interiors, we were thrilled to be part of this exciting project, bringing our sustainable, nature-inspired lighting into the hotel’s stunning lobby.

Our custom lighting installation features biofabricated lampshades, grown from mycelium, that greet guests as they enter the lobby. Each piece, including our MushLume Hemi Pendant in Medium and MushLume Hemi Pendant in Large, was selected to fit the hotel’s blend of vintage warmth and modern sophistication. The result is a striking but subtle lighting configuration that embodies the calming textures and forms found in nature, without sacrificing the contemporary design ethos that defines this boutique hotel.

Working closely with the hotel’s ownership and Frank Architecture, we designed a custom lighting solution that complements The Westley Hotel’s "proper wild" aesthetic. Our MushLume Hemi Pendants, with their natural tones and organic shapes, seamlessly blend with the lobby’s sweeping archways and abundant natural light, creating a welcoming space that reflects Calgary’s unique blend of modern elegance and wild west charm. The use of mycelium, a renewable and biodegradable material, not only elevates the hotel’s vintage-modern vibe but also highlights our commitment to sustainability—guests are often surprised to learn that the lampshades were grown from mushrooms. As Kristen Lien, principal at Frank Architecture & Interiors, noted, “They just bring an unexpected element when you walk into the lobby.”
