Mycelium Provides Acoustic Performance, Naturally
MushLume Disc Sconces positioned in a sound absorbing array on the wall
At MushLume Lighting, we’ve always asked nature for guidance. From the cellular patterns of mycelium to the soft hush of a forest canopy, we’ve drawn inspiration from the Earth—not only in form but in function. Our newest collection, In Stillness, is a continuation of this dialogue with the natural world. It’s an invitation to slow down, soften the noise, and bring intentionality to the spaces we inhabit.
Launched at ICFF, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in May of 2025, the In Stillness collection features pendants and sconces that offer more than illumination. These pieces are sound-absorbing sculptures, grown from hemp and mycelium, that help quiet the space both visually and acoustically. Designed for environments where serenity matters—hospitality, wellness, workplace, and home—this collection brings a new dimension to our ethos of regenerative design.
MushLume Coral Sconce
In Stillness is our first collection of lighting designed specifically around highlighting the functional characteristic that is intrinsic to its material—sound absorption.
Each fixture is cultivated from a blend of agricultural waste—hemp hurds, a byproduct of the fiber industry—and living mycelium, the branching root structure of fungi. As the mycelium grows, it binds the substrate into a dense yet lightweight form, one that naturally dampens sound and creates a feeling of calm. The result is a material that is not only biodegradable and carbon-sequestering, but now also functional in a whole new sensory way.
“Our biophilic acoustic lighting systems utilize the natural noise dampening characteristics of the dense network of hyphae that makes up mycelium. With over eight miles of sound absorbing thread-like filaments packed into every cubic inch of biomaterial, we’re harnessing Nature’s genius to bring sustainability to acoustic lighting solutions.”
We introduced In Stillness with three organic silhouettes: Disc, Coral, and Stones. Each form is minimal yet alive, tactile yet restrained—allowing the material itself to be the voice. We believe these shapes offer space for reflection and pause, a rare luxury in our overstimulated world.
MushLume Stones Sconces
The sconces and pendants can be configured in patterns, using multiple sizes and layered in height or depth, thus increasing sound absorption and light performance within a space.
As with all MushLume creations, sustainability is not a feature—it’s the foundation. Our lampshades are grown, not manufactured, using only renewable, low-impact resources. This process uses no plastics, resins, or VOCs. When their lifecycle ends, the lampshades can return to the Earth, leaving no trace.
But this collection is about more than environmental harmony. It’s about emotional resonance. In an age of constant noise, literal and figurative, we’re reminded that silence can be its own kind of light.
